Bregáin: Irish Folk and Traditional Music
Welcome to this unique and unpredictable cacophony of celtic sounds that has even most staid of music lovers tapping their toes. Living all over Europe now, the band used to be based in cosmopolitan London for 14 years, the former Kilkenny band enjoy an array of talents.
Lead singer, Joe Dowling's vocal abilities are hard-hitting and typical of the lyrical and musical Irish. His playing of the bodhran is essential for traditional Irish music and now he plays the bouzouki as well. Female vocalist Ann Coughlan's rich enchanting harmonies
and proficient accordian playing provide a pleasant and original sound for Bregáin.
The haunting sound of uilleann pipes can be heard from Gabby Fitzgerald; his creativeness is completely timeless and he has the ability to play anything Irish. Guitarist Jimmy Brennan is probably one of the more important members of Bregáin, his rythm
guitar holdin the band together on a good night and if you can catch him unaware, his soft voice can be heard providing backing vocals.
The mandolin and banjo are played courtesy of Seamus Phelan, his fingers slide along his instruments with majestic grace. His superb playing has not yet been surpassed by any other traditional band.
In the unique come-back gig in Helsinki on the St. Patrick's Day party in Tavastia-Club on the 17th of March, 2003, the old band will be joined by Thomas Nyberg playing base.
So either sit back or stand up and dance, but enjoy some of the finest culture ever to come out of Ireland! |
